Title: Matsukaze's Dance
Date: May 26th - June 4th, 2008
Medium: Derwent Pencil Crayons and Copic Liners and Markers

So, this is my entry for the :iconkimono-lovers:'s Geimyo (Artist's Name) contest in which club members were randomly assigned a name and then asked to draw their interpretation of it in any style. I chose to represent my Geimyo with the drawing of a young Maiko (Apprentice Geisha).

"Matsukaze" means "Wind Through The Pine Trees" and like a young sapling she easily sways along with the wind in a rhythmic and intriguing dance. Her outfit is representative of the month of November when the Momiji (Maple) trees are turning leaves and the blowing wind scatters their colors around in a decorative pallet.

The pose for the Maiko was taken from "Geisha: A Living Tradition" by Kyoko Aihara. The original photo is in the back of the book under the "Artistic Accomplishments" section. The photo features a group of Maikos learning dance with fans, and the Maiko I chose is waaaaaaaaay in the back of the picture. She looks so serene but the image was a bit small so I had to take some liberty with the facial expression. As most people know, I CAN'T DRAW FACES FOR BEANS! BEANS!

So, the face, outfit, fans and setting were designed by myself. The brush painting of the pine tree was found via Google Images. I did it with a Copic Brush Stroke liner and then colored it slightly with Copic Markers. I'm sorry if the background looks bad, but I'm not used to drawing wood or interiors too often, especially ones with VERY light tones!

Time: A looooooong time. It looks me longer to draw it out and ink it than it did for me to color it! Drawing and Inking was around 13 hours of constant change and ink, and the coloring was 7 hours almost non-stop. So, 13+7=20 hours.
